The 2018 NAC East Division season got off to a dramatic start for the St. Lawrence Central varsity baseball team on Monday.
Sophomore Ansen Weegar emerged as the winning pitcher in relief of senior starter Ryan Newtown as the Larries pushed across the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 win over St. Regis Falls on a day when temperatures hovered just above freezing.
Weegar took over with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth after the Saints had fashioned the tying run. He wound up working his way out of that jam then pitching a perfect seventh inning to earn the decision, finishing with four strikeouts and a walk. Newtown fanned 10 and walked three.
Alex White was saddled with the loss in relief of starter Danny Lucey, who posted six strikeouts and four walks while allowing five hits over the first six frames. White only faced four batters and got no outs before the winning run scored on a throwing error.
Tyler Robinson singled, doubled and scored the game-winning run for SLC. Jarrett St. Hilaire also stroked a double and single. Trent Dow singled, scored a run and drove in another while Weegar (RS) and Sam Lyon had the other hits.
Nathan Work ripped an RBI-double for SRF while Chris Goodrow (RS) and Lucey produced two hits apiece. Brennan Sharlow singled and came around to score the first run of the NAC season in front of Work’s double in the top of the fourth inning.
The Larries pulled even then ahead with solo runs in their next two at-bats before the Saints knotted the score a 2-2 in the top of the sixth where Sharlow walked, moved to third on a single then raced home on a wild pitch.
Robinson keyed the game-winning sequence in the seventh with a lead-off single. Weegar followed with a bunt single before Robinson made his home from thirdbase on the fifth error of the game for the Saints.
“We were just glad to get the game in but it was nice to get the win too,” noted coach Chris Dow, who is back at the varsity helm after a five-year break.
