SOFTBALL....SLC VS. NORWOOD/NORFOLK
St. Lawrence Central rallied to thwart Norwood-Norfolk 12-11 in nine innings. SLC 12, N-N 11 (9 inning): At Brasher Falls, the visiting Lady Flyers scored early and then often in building an 11-7 lead through seven at-bats before the Lady Larries staged a dramatic comeback that ended with junior Haleigh Agans delivering a game-winning one-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth.
“We were in real trouble but the girls really battled right to the end,” noted coach Tim Brown after his squad managed to improve to 3-0 with their third high-scoring win in four days.
Sophomore Bailee Gauthier went the distance for the win, working 11 strikeouts around 15 walks and eight hits. Bryanna Powell also pitched all nine innnings in taking the loss, fanning seven and walking just two while surrendering 12 hits.
Sidney Molnar provided an early offensive spark for the Lady Flyers by lining the softball to deep centerfield for a grand slam homerun in the first inning. She also drilled a two-run triple, where she was thrown out at the plate, in the second inning to finish with six RBI but that still wasn’t enough as the Lady Larries steadily worked their way out of a 9-1 deficit, starting with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh. Jenna Thompson, who went 3-6 with a run scored and three RBI, capped the seventh-inning rally with a two-out, two-run triple.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Lady Flyers regained the lead in the top of the ninth as Cassidy Weaver stroked a one-out single then scored one batter later when a sacrifice bunt eventually led to a pair of SLC errors that allowed Weaver to score all the way from first. N-N went on to lead the bases before Gauthier notched her last strikeout of the game to end the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lauren Shantie (2-4, 3RS, RBI) led-off with a single but was forced out at secondbase on a groundball by Hailie Weegar. Thompson followed with a single and both baserunners eventually advanced before Agans stepped up to drill the game-winning hit.
Weegar was 2-4 with four runs scored and three RBI and Melanie Richards contributed an RBI-double and scored a run in the winning effort.
Powell also made lead contributions at the plate for N-N going 3-5 with three runs scored an an RBI. Kirstin Barkley singled and scored three runs in the losing cause while Breanna Deshane tripled and scored twice.
