Larries blanked the Icemen 6-0 to earn their second sectional title in the past three years. St. Lawrence Central also won the regular season title with an 18-2 mark.
“It definitely feels good. We knew we had to good a good start. After the first period, there was a lot of confidence in the room and then we kept rolling,” Arquiett said, pointing to the two goals the Larries scored in the final 69 seconds of the opening period.
St. Lawrence Central then scored four goals in the final five minutes of the second period to take a 6-0 lead into the third period in the Division II championship game at the Cheel Campus Center.
Nate Stickney had given the Larries a three-goal advantage when he beat Norwood-Norfolk netminder Brandon Richards after Kody Kocsis showed patience along the boards to find his classmate alone at the top of the slot for a power play maker.
St. Lawrence Central Coach Mickey Locke admitted he is a fan of his club’s powerplay. “They move the puck around so well on the powerplay. On that goal, Kody showed great patience and Nate backed off from traffic to find space. He has such a heavy shot, and it eas a nice play from Kody,” the Larries coach said.,
Lukas Arquiett made it 4-0 1 minute 38 seconds later with another laser from the slot. Kocsis made it 5-0 with 1:43 to go in the second period on a rush down the slot and Drew Rose added another goal 29 seconds later to put the Larries up 6-0 over their Division II rival.
St. Lawrence Central had broken a tightly played defensive battle with two goals in a 10-second span late in the first period.
Luke Peets broke the scoreless tie after whe he locate loose puck in the crease, and the senior forward, who is known as the garbage man for his penchant for his work at the top of the crease, made it 1-0 Larries.
The opening goal drew a minor protest from Norwood-Norfolk. Kocsis said his linemate, Peets, waved at the puck with a high stick and missed it and was able to slide it in the net when it landed.
“His stick was up and there was no contact. It was good to get that first goal, but isn’t it always,” he said.
Ten seconds later, the Larries’ leading scorer, Arquiett, converted on a feed into the slot from Kocsis. Stickney also drew an assist on the play.
“It’s been great to play with these guys,” Stickney said of his classmates on a Larries team led by its senior class. “To have this success in our senior year, it is just awesome,” he said.
Stickney a Brookdale native whose home is near the St. Lawrence Central and Norwood-Norfolk boundary, acknowledged sweeping Norwood-Norfolk this season was special.
“It’s always a big rivalry, a heated rivalry. We’ve been waiting to get the sour taste our of our mouth since last year.
St. Lawrence Central Coach Mickey Locke, who was named the Division II coach of the year, said the scoring spurts have been a theme for his team all season. “We have shown the ability to be explosive all year. When we get one, we can get two or three. It really changed the momentum of the whole game,” he said.
Locke said even though the Larries had a great campaign their season’s success was going to be judged by the results of Monday night’s game.
“This team has had the burden of expectations. It was all about this game. We knew we were going to have a good club going into the season. The way these guys have stayed disciplined, stayed on task, is real special. They deserve a lot of credit,” he said.
The veteran Larries mentor said the sectional title came against a very good Norwood-Norfolk team.
“Norwood-Norfolk is a very talented team. They are fast up front, solid on defense. We really got after them tonight with our forecheck,” Locke said.
Norwood-Norfolk Coach Paul Durant ended his coaching career against his alma mater. He said the two late goals in the first period proved to be the difference in the game.
“We were playing decent up to that point,” he said of a game that saw both clubs with five shots on goal with just under two minutes left in the opening period,” he said.
“After they got those two goals, we didn’t play very well. It was just one of those things. We didn’t expect this type of game. We had a great season, but this definitely leaves a sour taste,” he added.
But Durant also credited the Larries for their play.
“Mickey has a great club over there. It would be nice if they were able to bring a state title home,” he said.
Brandon Richards had 28 saves in the first two periods for the Icemen, and Nate Burnett stopped 13 shots to earn the shutout.
The Larries, who advanced to the final four in their last state tournament appearance, will now get set to open this year’s NYSPHSAA Division II playoffs at home against the Section 6 champions, Williamsville-East, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Tri-Town Arena.
