SLC VARSITY FOOTBALL BEAT POTSDAM 20-6
Sophomore quarterback Isaiah Lyon fired a pair of first-half touchdown passes and Mark Crump bulled his way for 90 yards on 12 carries on Saturday as St. Lawrence Central defeated Potsdam 20-6 in a Northern Athletic Conference football matchup.
The Larries (1-2) put a damper on Potsdam’s Hall of Fame Weekend festivities with 282 yards of total offense while holding the Sandstoners (0-3) to just 137.
“They showed a lot of tenacity, they didn’t quit, they didn’t stop, they kept fighting,” said head coach Bruce Truax who picked up his first career coaching victory.
Lyon hit Hunter Storrin in stride with a perfect 34-yard pass down the right sideline for a first quarter touchdown and added another TD pass just 19 seconds before halftime as Devin Barnhart collected a 21-yard pass over the middle.
“We’ve been working really hard on that (the passing game). Our first two games, we let too much pressure on the quarterback. This game we let him have time,” said Truax.
The other Larrie touchdown also came in the second quarter as Keith Felix carried over from six yards out.
Felix ran for 54 yards on 10 carries on the day to complement Crump’s 90-yard rushing effort.
“Mark has been top-notch, he’s my horse. And the others are my speed guys,” noted Truax.
Potsdam scored the lone points of the second half when Brandon Buffham carried over from three yards out late in the third quarter. Buffham finished with 64 yards on 12 carries.
Truax, a Massena Central graduate, will welcome in Massena this Saturday in the Larries’ annual Hall of Fame game.
