2017 VARSITY HOCKEY - SLC/NN...St. Lawrence Central came away with the Division 2 crown in a Section 10 hockey
Boys' Section 10 Division 2 Hockey Championship St. Lawrence Central 7 Norwood-Norfolk 2. St. Lawrence Central started and finished strong to claim the Section 10 Division II boys hockey championship for a third straight year. The Larries scored the first three goals of the game and the last four to knock off Norwood-Norfolk 7-2 Monday night at Cheel Arena. St. Lawrence Central (19-2-1 overall), ranked No. 2 in the state poll, will travel to play Section 3’s Skaneateles, the No. 3 team, in a quarterfinal Saturday. “I think all year we’ve had really quick starts to our games,” Larries coach Mickey Locke said. “We’ve scored the first goal in every game but maybe three all year. When we get the first goal we can kind of settle into our game. I thought we were really consistent in all aspects of the game tonight. It was a really solid team effort in all three zones.” Last year the Larries fell behind Salmon River 3-0 early and rallied to win 4-3. This time SLC scored fast with a goal from Andrew Lantry just 48 seconds into the game. Lantry skated in front of the net and put a shot over the glove of Flyers goalie Grant VanBuren. “It just got the guys going early,” Lantry said. “We wanted to come out fast, and that’s what we did. I just threw it on net really.” The Larries kept pouring it on, making it 2-0 when Payton Felix scored on the rebound of a shot from Trent Dow at 6:40 to make it 2-0 and then 68 seconds later extended the lead to 3-0 with a rebound goal from Ian Bressett off a shot from Jack Pullano. SLC nearly got a fourth goal in the opening period when a shot from Drew Rose clanked off the post at 8:28. “I thought by getting those first goals we just kept building momentum,” Dow said. “It helped us a lot. After the first period (the mood) was really good. Everybody was upbeat. I thought we got a lot of pucks to the net and we crashed the net for rebounds.” Norwood-Norfolk (9-11-3) started to come back with a power-play goal from Nate Moulton at 11:03 of the opening period. Moulton put a shot over the shoulder of Larries goalie Rico DiMatteo. The Flyers added a second goal at 13:41 of the second period on a shot from Isaac Barkley. The play was discussed by officials for a few moments before the goal was awarded. “We felt we still had to battle, we just had to go out and play shift by shift,” Flyers coach Jeff Reyome said. “We had to win each shift. We thought we were still in the game probably until the last four minutes. We felt if we just tried to get shots on net, we could pick those rebounds up.”
