BY DAVE SHEA:
MADRID-SLC - Two young teams met at Madrid-Waddington on Saturday morning as the NAC East Girls Soccer began.
Both the host Yellowjackets and visiting St. Lawrence gain valuable experience in the course of the game where SLC prevailed 2-1 on the strength of two unassisted first half goals four minutes apart. The NAC East openers went to Colton-Pierrepont and Parishville-Hopkinton.
M-W also gained experience at playing in the gusting winds which approached gale proportions and shifted directions at different times.
"We knew that the wind would be a major factor so took it in the the first half. We have a lot of sophomores this year and we lost a lot to graduation," said SLC Coach Jenna Chamberlain who was a standout athlete at M-W in her school days.
"It is always nice to get a win on this field and it was a nice win for the girls. They did a good job in the wind."
Chantel McCarthy scored the winning goal for the Larries and Rylee Daoust opened the scoring. M-W generated a series threats in the second half with sprint standout Hailee Blair running onto the lead passes on the wing. They broke through with 10 minutes to play when Grace Plumley converted a setup from Blair to score from close range.
M-W Justin Richards of his young team, with only one senior in Chloe Tiernan, which got even younger when six players had to be called up from the JV team to cope with injuries.
"We had to call up JVs just to play today and overall the girls played pretty well. They scored their first goal in a scrum and the wind was just brutal," said Coach Richards.
"But we worked hard and Grace Plumley and Hailee Blair really worked well together. It was a tough game but it was so good to have the kids out playing. SLC has a good team with some quick players."
Hannah Agans made four saves as the last line of defense in the victory and Alaina Armstrong finished with three saves for M-W.
