2019 SLC -8 POTSDAM-4 BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE
The St. Lawrence Central varsity boys lacrosse team gradually worked its way to an 8-4 NAC win over Potsdam Central on Thursday.
Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the Larries built a 3-1 lead in the first period and carried a 5-2 lead into the fourth where they put together another 3-1 run.
Freshman Jayden Ashley fired home four goals in the winning effort. Junior Ryan LaPage broke through for a pair while classmate Zach Dumers and sophomore Alex Burg each netted singletons and junior Sean Hornung tallied a solo assist while junior Cash Feeley turned aside 13 shots backstopping the win.
For the Sandstoners, junior Keenan Hassett fashioned two goals and an assist. Sophomores Drew Talcott and Will Varney struck for the other goals while junior Nate Green made 11 saves.
The Larries (3-0, 2-0) are slated to play at Salmon River next Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. while the Sandstoners (1-2, 0-2) return to action on Saturday with a nonconference game at Indian River Central starting at 11 a.m.
The other NAC lacrosse matchup on Thursday saw OFA overwhelm Plattsburgh 20-5 while Salmon River at Canton was postponed to May 3. The Shamrocks (0-1, 0-1) are now scheduled to play at Massena on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
SLC 16, Sara-Lake Placid 1: In their NAC season-opener on Wednesday at the SUNY Potsdam turf field, the Larries scored six unanswered goals in the first quarter and never looked back in downing SLP.
Matt Burg (4 assists) and Ashley (1 assist) led the winning attack with five goals each as the Larries worked their way to a 6-0 lead through the first quarter and never looked back. Alex Burg tallied three goals and an assist. LaPage finished with two goals and two helpers while classmate Zach Dumers fashioned a goal and two assists. Sean Hornung and freshman Gabe Hornung each logged an assist while Feeley blocked three shots backstopping the win.
Matt White converted off an assist from Dylan Murnane for a man-up goal in the second quarter to account for the SLP offense. The duo of Hugo Hobson (7 saves) and Logan Brown (4 saves) split crease duties.
With construction of the new field at the SLC campus due to get underway later this spring, the Larries (2-0, 1-0) have arranged to use the SUNY Potsdam field as their home away from home this year and their games there are all slated to start at 7 p.m.
