FEB 2017 The St. Lawrence Central Larries celebrate with the Section X Championship banner and plaque after .the Section X Class C Championship over Brushton-Moira. The Larries were down by 12 points early in the game, but surged in the second half, lifting them to a 46-40 victory. St. Lawrence Central’s Cole Meacham (5) leaps over Brushton-Moira defender Jake Brown (25) to score off the layup extending the Larries lead to four points in the fourth quarter. Top-seeded St. Lawrence Central battled back from a dismal 14-2 start against #2-seeded Brushton-Moira in an effort that was replete with turnovers, missed easy buckets and a rushed offense that found open looks, but without a finish to each transition. In a live interview with NCSN (at the half of the Chateaugay-Harrisville broadcast), forward Kolby Perkins noted, “We had a lot of jitters to start. We came out really flat. I think we felt we had too much pressure on us.” After all, this was a completely new cast of players than since last won the Class C title in 2012 and 2013. Shiloh Winters (9 points) helped keep the St. Lawrence within range in the first half with a team-best six points. But in the second half, the Larries came out settled and more confident. “He (Coach Joe Reome) just told us we need to calm down and play our basketball.” Senior guard Cole Meacham added, “We were trying to run too many plays (in the first half) and we were more of a fluid offense (in the second half).” Jared Young, who scored just one point in the first three quarters, got loose for 12 points – including a pair of there-pointers -- in the final frame. Perkins gave the Larries their first lead at 50-49 with a putback just 14 seconds into the final period. Young’s second three-ball with under 2:00 remaining pushed the Larries to their biggest lead at 43-35 and proved to be the game winner. Guard Matt Berg who was hounded and contained to just two points in the first half, found ways to score eight in the second half. Reome said the key to staying in the game and getting the win was the team’s defense, allowing his team to get over the hump in the second half. Chase Bassett led the Panthers with 14 points, while Anthony Premo and Jake Brown finished with seven each. B-M finished at 9-13
