NAC baseball action on Wednesday saw Brushton-Moira earn an East Division twinbill sweep on the road over St. Lawrence Central by scores of 11-7 and 7-1 At Brasher Falls, the visiting Panthers scored at least one run in all five innings of the first game then continued to push runners across the plate in the nightcap to complete their season-opener sweep.
“We shook the rust out early, settled down and played better defense as the games progressed,” said Brushton-Moira’s first-year head coach Jody Johnston. “We got strong pitching performances from both Cameron Johnston in game one and Carter Wheeler in game two.”
The younger Johnston tossed all five innings in the opener and allowed only five hits and one walk, striking out six SLC batters. Ryan Newtown suffered the season-opening loss for St. Lawrence, serving up 11 hits while striking out four.
Brushton-Moira got on the board first, scoring once in the top of the first, but SLC countered and held a 3-1 lead after the opening inning. BMC cut its deficit to one with a solo run in the second, but the Larries increased their lead to 5-2 in their second at-bat. SLC maintained its three-run lead as both teams scored once in the third, then the Panther bats came alive, as BMC pulled in front 7-6 with a four-run fourth. The Panthers built their lead to 11-6 with another four-spot in the fifth, limiting the Larries to just one run on the home-half of the inning for the season-opening victory. 4/12/2017
