2017 LACROSSE SLC (WINS) / SALMON RIVER
4/8/2017 Two teams entered Saturday’s Northern Athletic Conference boys lacrosse game at Potsdam High School with undefeated records. It was a certainty that one of those squads would leave the turf field disappointed.
A six-goal outburst in the third quarter propelled the St. Lawrence Central Larries into the lead, an advantage they would not relinquish in posting a 14-12 win against Salmon River. The victory kept the Larries’ record unblemished at 3-0, while the loss was the first of the season for Salmon River, as the Shamrocks drop to 2-1.
In nonleague action on Saturday Bethlehem rode a 7-0 first quarter lead to a 13-7 nonleague win over Massena.
Zach St. Hilaire scored twice and set up two other tallies during the third quarter, which saw the Larries erase a 7-5 halftime deficit and turn it into an 11-8 lead entering the final 12 minutes of the NAC clash against the rival Shamrocks. St. Hilaire got the third quarter outburst started just 41 seconds after the start of the period, then Isiah Lyon tied the game at 7-7 and Drew Rose put SLC in front for good with goals coming 19 seconds apart. St. Hilaire extended the Larries’ lead to two goal, as Colby Jenkinson gave SLC a three-goal cushion. Lyon capped the barrage with 1:55 left in the stanza, as the Shamrocks played a man down.
Salmon River’s Rowisonkies Barnes ended the SLC run, scoring Salmon River’s only goal of the quarter with 34.1 seconds left in the period.
Salmon River pulled to within one goal twice in the fourth quarter, but untimely penalties halted the Shamrocks’ momentum, which allowed the Larries to regain control and hold on for the win.
The Shamrocks trailed 11-8 entering the fourth quarter and opened up the scoring in the final period just 41 seconds in as Cash Mitchell found the mark. But, Luke Collins countered less than a minute later to regain the three-goal spread. Salmon River defender Abram Garrow sparked the SRC offense with an end-to-end scoring rush with 6:22 left. Myles Jacobs stole the ball 14 seconds after the goal, then fed Isaiah Skidders who scored to pull the Shamrocks to within one with 6:08 left, but a penalty killed the SRC momentum.
Carter Rose score on the power play with 4:49 left to put St. Lawrence back up by two goals, only to have the Shamrocks take advantage of a Larries’ penalty to climb back to within one goal when Mitchell scored his second of the quarter.
Rose connected for the final goal of the game, reclaiming the Larries’ two-goal advantage, then SLC withstood the Salmon River pressure in the final two minutes to post the victory.
“It was a good win for us,” said St. Lawrence coach Chris Rose, who had seven players connect for goals during the win.
St. Hilaire and Drew Rose led the way with three goals and two assists each, as Collins added a pair of markers and five helpers to the victory. Lyon and Carter Rose added two tallies each, while solo markers came off the sticks of Gavin McGrath and Colby Jenkinson.
Parker Hornung backstopped the victory with nine saves.
While the St. Lawrence coach was pleased with the outcome, Salmon River coach Jim Barnes was not overcome with joy with the effort of his charges.
“We played better today, but we made too many mistakes and St. Lawrence took advantage of those mistakes,” said Barnes. “
We have a young team and they have to adjust to playing at the varsity level. It’s a tough loss, but we need to regroup and get refocused for next week.”...(massena courier)
