2017 LACROSSE SECTION X CHAMPIONS BEAT CANTON
Zach St. Hilaire scored his game-high sixth goal of the night with just 30.3 seconds left in regulation time on Wednesday night, lifting the St. Lawrence Central boys lacrosse team to a wild 13-12 victory over Canton in the Section 10 championship game at Potsdam High School.
“Guys were sliding off me, I was open and I was getting the open shots. Our guys did a good job getting the groundballs, the faceoffs, the possessions tonight,” said St. Hilaire after tallying his team-leading 46th goal of the season off a quick behind-the-cage pass from Luke Collins. “We haven’t won this in a while and it feels pretty good. I love it.”
The Larries overcame a gritty effort by the Bears who rallied from deficits of 6-0 in the second quarter and 10-4 in the third to tie the game at 12-12 on Isaac Thrasher’s goal with only 1:30 left in regulation time.
SLC goalie Parker Hornung stopped two point-blank shots with under 10 seconds left to preserve the victory. Hornung finished with 13 saves overall.
“We held on. It’s never over when you play Canton year after year. Give them credit,” said Larrie coach Chris Rose whose team defeated the Bears for the third time this year. “Our guys didn’t get down on ourselves when Canton came back and then Zach buried the last one up top. He gets his hands free and he can really shoot the ball.”
SLC (14-1) and Canton (12-5) both move on to the state tournament with a doubleheader set for Saturday at SUNY Canton. Canton will be Section 10’s Class C representative and will meet Section 3’s Jamesville-DeWitt at 2 p.m. SLC, with just four seniors on the roster, will be Section 10’s Class D rep and will meet Section 3’s Syracuse CBA at 4:30 p.m. It will be the Bears’ third straight state tournament appearance while the Larries return to state play for the first time since 2013.
“We had spurts where we played 5-6-7 seven minutes of good lacrosse. But we didn’t play a full game,” said Bears coach Tim Youngs. “We came back strong, but their goalie made a big stop at the end.”
Drew Rose contributed two goals and five assists including his 40th assist of the year for the winners. Carter Rose scored twice with an assist, Luke Collins, named league MVP after the game, tallied a goal and three helpers while Isaiah Lyon scored twice for the Larries.
“I was impressed with our leaders tonight,” said coach Rose. “I couldn’t be prouder of these guys.”
Canton was led by Cody Sipher with five goals and two assists. Thrasher finished with two goals and an assist, Kiernan Lafavre scored twice while Sam Martin added a goal and one assist. Jake Mattice made seven saves in goal.
Section 10 referee Jeff James, who has been battling illness, was presented with Section 10’s Man of the Year Award.
